Earth Retention

Retaining Walls

Engineered earth retention solutions for residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects. Designed to last.

Retention Solutions for Every Site

Retaining walls are engineered structures that hold back soil and rock on slopes. Coast Geotechnical designs retaining walls for residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects across Western Canada, from small gravity walls to large soldier pile and mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) systems. We coordinate with structural engineers and contractors to deliver practical, cost-effective solutions.

All designs are prepared and sealed by a licensed Professional Engineer in BC, and include the geotechnical recommendations, structural drawings, and specifications required for building permit submission.

Scope of Services

  • Gravity and semi-gravity wall design
  • Soldier pile and lagging wall systems
  • Sheet pile wall design
  • Mechanically Stabilised Earth (MSE) walls
  • Modular block retaining wall assessment
  • Tieback and soil nail design
  • Surcharge and seismic loading analysis
  • As-built review and monitoring

Coast Geotechnical designs and assesses modular block retaining walls from all major manufacturers including Allan Block, Lock Block, Redi-Rock, Verti Block, Ankora, Magnum Stone, and Miragrid geogrid reinforcement systems.

How It Works

01

Site Assessment

We evaluate the site topography, soil conditions, drainage, and surcharge loading to inform wall type selection and design parameters.

02

Wall Design

Our engineers prepare geotechnical recommendations and coordinate structural wall design, including drawings and specifications ready for permitting.

03

Construction Support

We provide inspections and engineering review during construction to confirm the wall is built to design intent.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of retaining wall is right for my project? +
Wall type depends on retained height, available space, soil conditions, drainage, and aesthetics. We assess all factors and recommend the most practical and cost-effective solution for your site.
Do retaining walls need an engineer in BC? +
Walls retaining more than 1.2m (4 feet) of soil typically require a building permit and engineer-sealed drawings in BC. Many municipalities require engineered design for any retaining wall, regardless of height. We'll advise based on your local requirements.
Can you help with an existing wall that's moving or failing? +
Yes. We can assess existing walls, investigate causes of movement or failure, and design remediation or replacement solutions.
